Katie Fetting of top seeded Chargers earns PACWEST WVB Athlete of Week award

February 24, 2015

The Camosun College Chargers women’s volleyball team finished the PACWEST regular season with a home and away series versus their Island Rivals the Vancouver Island University Mariners.

Katie Fetting WVBOver the course of two matches, third-year outside hitter Katie Fetting (Lethbridge, AB) put forth 38 points as the Chargers earned a split and finished the year with three wins and one loss to their Nanaimo counterparts. Today, the PACWEST awarded Ms. Fetting with her first PACWEST Women’s Volleyball Athlete of the Week as the top seeded Chargers prepare for the PACWEST Provincial Volleyball Championships hosted by Camosun, February 26-28

The Chargers picked up their third loss of the season last Thursday in Nanaimo against the Mariners who collected their sole 2014-15 win over Camosun in four sets (25-18, 25-21, 26-28, 25-13). On Saturday, the two teams went the distance in Victoria delivering a thrilling five-set battle that ended in victory for the home team (25-21, 16-25, 25-19, 21-25, 15-4).

“VIU has closed out the season with strong volleyball and performances like Katie’s on Saturday helped keep them at bay and allowed us to wrap up an incredible season with a 21-3 record,” comments Chargers Head Coach Chris Dahl. “The Island Rivalry is a lot of fun. Our program has long been the underdog so to take three of four matches this season from the Mariners is an accomplishment unto itself.”

Katie transferred to Camosun College from Lethbridge where she was an ACAC All-Star in 2013-14. In addition to her offensive contributions, her ball control and ability to read the game from the backcourt are a major factor in the success of the Chargers.

“Katie is a lot of fun for fans of the game to watch,” says Coach Dahl. “It’s easy to notice her when she attacks the ball… not only is it impressive to see, but you can hear it. On Saturday we went the distance and Katie had one of her most significant matches of the season. Along with her teammates, she’s preparing for the PACWEST Championships and clearly the prep is going well.”

Camosun College hosts the PACWEST Provincial Championships February 26-28 at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence. Seeded No. 1, the Chargers women have a first round bye and begin their pursuit of the conference title in Friday’s 6pm semi-final match.

“The PACWEST Championships are going to be an incredible event,” says Coach Dahl. “I hope people have it marked on their calendar. Our women’s program is currently ranked #2 in the country and the men are also one of the top ranked programs in the nation. Championship weekend is a great opportunity for local volleyball fans to take in the action. We have no idea how this thing is going to wrap up, but I’m comfortable in suggesting that it’s going to be an exciting finish!”
