Squaring off against the Vancouver Island University Mariners in their final league home and away matches, the Camosun Chargers men’s volleyball team produced a pair of straight set wins on Thursday and Saturday to finish the regular season #2 in the PACWEST standings, just behind the nation’s top squad, the Douglas College Royals. Leading the Chargers to victory was fourth-year setter Vitor Macedo (Rio de Janerio, Brazil) who cranked out two star performances to earn this week’s PACWEST Men’s Volleyball Athlete of the Week.

“In Thursday’s match, Vitor consistently created one-on-one situations for his hitters,” comments Chargers Head Coach Charles Parkinson. “His accuracy, especially in out of system plays, was uncanny. Vitor also used his pin-point serving to put the Mariners on their heels and contributed nine digs as a defensive leader in the backcourt. Saturday was a carbon copy of Thursday as VIU travelled to Victoria where Vitor quarterbacked the Chargers to another 3-0 win. Both in and out of system he was at the top of his game and with three rookies in the line-up he infused them with confidence through his set selection, decision making and encouragement. Once again he was superb on defense, contributing 11 digs and helping the Chargers to wrap up second place in the league standings.”

Having completed the regular season, the Chargers are only days away from the PACWEST Volleyball Championships hosted by Camosun College at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence, February 26-68. As the #2 seed, the Chargers bypass Thursday’s Quarter-Final round and head straight into the Semi’s, hitting the court on Friday at 3pm.

“I’m very proud of our execution against a very good VIU team over the last weekend of play,” comments Coach Parkinson. “We served extremely tough, which made it impossible for them to use their middle attack with any consistency. This allowed us to release to the outside and I thought we blocked with terrific discipline against their wing attackers. It was also nice to see that we were converting in transition at a very high rate of efficiency, while limiting our errors. And finally, after weeks of dedicated training I thought our passers had perhaps their best performance of the season. The trick for us now is to continue to refine the small things that make Championship teams and carry the momentum and confidence into the semi-final round on Friday. In the end you need execution, determination and a little bit of luck to win a Championship, and it doesn’t hurt to have a loud and supportive home crowd to take you over the top!”
