Chargers women collect 12th straight win to put stronghold on 1st

February 18, 2015

The Camosun Chargers women’s volleyball team collected their 12th straight win while hosting the COTR Avalanche on the Valentine’s Day weekend. The Chargers have a firm grip on 1st place in the PACWEST standings and are ranked #2 nationally with a record of 20-2. One week of matches remains prior to the Provincial Championships hosted by Camosun College February 26-28 at PISE.

WVB Double BlockThe Chargers had their work cut out for them against the #4 Avalanche, who on Friday, forced Camosun to drop their first set in a stretch of 8 consecutive 3-0 matches. Despite snapping Camosun’s straight-set winning streak, COTR would eventually succumb as the home team went on to capture both Saturday’s (3-1: 25-23, 27-29, 25-22, 25-21) and Sunday’s matches (3-0: 25-23, 25-23, 25-22).

“College of the Rockies brings a different style of play than we've seen on a regular basis this year in the PACWEST,” comments Chargers Head Coach Chris Dahl. “It’s one that I greatly admire in that their athletes are in relentless pursuit of the ball on every play. Coach Zurrin is fast becoming known as a coach that gets his teams to play with emotion on the floor and that level of engagement is definitely a factor in the game.”

This week, the Chargers go to battle with the VIU Mariners to complete the season’s Island rivalry series. On Thursday, Camosun faces off against VIU in Nanaimo (Women 6pm; Men 8pm). The two programs meet again on Saturday in Victoria at PISE. Matches can be viewed live on SportsCanadaTV http://sportscanada.tv/pacwest/

“The final weekend of PACWEST league play against VIU is great for many reasons,” says Coach Dahl. “First, it’s the Island Rivalry and the two programs have a long history of competition. Further, VIU is a quality opponent. They field a lineup that is on par with ours as one of the most veteran laden crews in the PACWEST. They’ve accomplished a lot over the years and seem to be rounding into form as we near the PACWEST Championships.”

“I suspect VIU will be looking to secure the second seed this weekend and in order to do that they’ll have to take a match or two from us,” he adds. “We’ll continue to do what we do and seek to perform at our best on each day. We’ll learn from the successes and failures that inevitable happen in sport and seek to make progress. We secured the #1 seed weeks ago. That’s quite the accomplishment and we don’t have to scoreboard watch or jockey for position heading into playoffs. We get to focus on continuing to make progress and refining our game. We’ll have those opportunities win or lose in this final weekend.”

On Saturday, the Chargers recognize four graduating student-athletes from the women’s program while hosting their final league match of the season. The women’s graduating players are:

Hilary Graham                   Courtenay                           Year 5                    BSLF ExWell
Mariah Holmstrom          Campbell River                  Year 5                    Business
Morgan Marshall              Smithers                              Year 4                    BSFL
Erika Sheen                        Lethbridge, AB                  Year 5                    Business

“Hilary and Mariah have been with this program for as long as I have,” states Coach Dahl. “Morgan is graduating after four years in the Centre for Sport and Exercise Education and Erika graduates from the School of Business after transferring to Camosun for her fourth and fifth seasons. They’re remarkable women, each with their own story and they’ve definitely left their mark on the program and those around them.”
