National bronze medal golfers go for gold in 2014

September 4, 2014

The Camosun College Chargers men's golf team aims to make a strong return to the links this year in their pursuit of the national title with the same talented field of players who finished third at last year's Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Golf Championship.

FlegelHead Coach John Randle, who has helped the Chargers amass a trove of winning hardware since he joined the program in 2008, anticipates that 2014 will be another successful year for the program.

"2014 will be an interesting season," he commented. "We have all five guys returning from our Top-3 nationally ranked team from last fall so if the guys play up to their potential, we will do just fine. Like I always say, we look good on paper and I'm looking forward to see how we do on grass!"

Following a competitive try out qualifying tournament, which was held this past weekend at the Chargers home course at Bear Mountain Resort, Coach Randle whittled the selection to the five returnees plus one newcomer.

Leading the pack once again is veteran Jarred Callbeck who added another bevy of awards to his collection in the 2013 season including his second consecutive CCAA All-Canadian, CCAA Academic All-Canadian and PACWEST First Team All-Star awards. In the off season, Callbeck won the 51st Annual Cedar Hill Open Men's Golf Tournament (May 17-18) draining an eight-foot birdie putt for a 125 total at the 36-hole event.

Joining Callbeck on the list of returnees are third-year vets Brady Stead (Vernon) and Grant Maskiewich (Smithers) and second-year student-athletes Mike Flegel (A.E. Peacock, Moose Jaw, Sask.) and Brett Devries (Kelowna). Rounding out the six-man team is rookie Scott Merriam from Cranbrook.

The Chargers head into their first tournament of the PACWEST season this weekend at the Northview Golf and Country Club in Surrey. Kwantlen Polytechnic University will be hosting the two day event which runs September 6-7.
