Chargers women’s basketball Christmas Classic a gigantic success

January 7, 2014

Beyond practicing new sets, cementing new systems, and interacting with new players, the biggest benefit of the Chargers annual Christmas Classic is an opportunity to play against new competition. From December 28th to 30th, seven teams from across Canada, and one from Washington State graced the hardwood of the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence.

When the dust settled, two teams stood with flawless records - host Camosun Chargers and SAIT Trojans from Calgary.  Leading the way for the Chargers was fourth year forward Elyse Matthews.  She praised tournament competition after posting a ten point, six rebound, six assist line against Keyano: It’s great because it’s a chance to play against bigger players, and new systems,” Elyse said. Regarding the rewards of playing teams the Chargers haven’t played before, Elyse stated “They’re all really good, and do things in ways we’re not used to, which means we can now study them offensively and defensively and find ways to make us better.”

The tourney is the only women’s basketball tournament between Christmas and New Year’s east of Ontario. It’s become the catalyst for teams needing to gain a competitive advantage heading into the second half of the season. For the Chargers, finishing 3-0 was a good sign for a team looking to build on a productive first half. Head coach Brett Westcott added, “We just want to play consistent and show we are getting better as we move forward.” Westcott continued, “We have seven weeks of league games to determine whether we can reach the playoffs and once we get there then things start all over for everybody. So far this season, it has been proven any of the top seven teams in the PACWEST can beat each other so just getting to Provincials gives you a chance to win a championship and all we want is a chance.”

The Chargers start going after that “chance” January 10th. Next action at PISE is Friday, January 24th against the Langara Falcons. A complete Camosun Chargers schedule can be found here.
