Chargers showcase senior girls' high school volleyball action
October 1, 2014
The Camosun College Chargers women’s volleyball program will host its annual Senior Girls’ High School Tournament this weekend at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence. The event has attracted over 20 teams from across Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland and will showcase some of BC’s most promising up and coming talent.
“This tournament features many of the top teams in the province,”comments Chargers Women’s Volleyball Head Coach Chris Dahl. “South Delta is the No. 1 seed in the tournament. They are the defending AAAA provincial champions and return a veteran roster led by the McNamara twins who recently represented Canada in beach volleyball at the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing finishing with a silver medal.”
The draw also includes a number of strong Island teams including Timberline (Campbell River), Dover Bay (Nanaimo), Ladysmith and Brentwood as well as local teams from Lambrick Park, Oak Bay and Belmont and first time attendees, Little Flower Academy from Vancouver. Friday is pool play with playoffs starting on Saturday morning.
“Our tournament provides an opportunity for the province’s top teams to play each other early in the event,” states Coach Dahl. “From start to finish there are competitive matches.”
Both the senior girls’ high school tournament and the Chargers girls’ volleyball camp (which attracted over 40 participants to the courts at PISE this summer) are highlights of the Camosun women’s pre-season schedule.
“These events serve as great opportunities for us to connect with the youth volleyball community,” remarks Coach Dahl.
“I expect that the later start for school programs will affect where teams are at in their level of execution on the weekend. However, I anticipate that the excitement and energy that athletes and their teams bring to an event like this will carry the action over the course of the weekend.”
