Camosun golfers charging for gold
September 5, 2013
After losing last year's PACWEST Championship in a tie-breaker by a single stroke, the Camosun College Chargers men's golf team is approaching the 2013 season with a vengeance and looking to settle the score with gold.
Camosun golfers L-R: Mike Flegel, Head Coach John Randle, Jamie Curiston, Martin Kim, Grant Maskiewich & Brady Stead (Missing: Jarred Callbeck & Jared Hundza)
"We're set for another great season and we're focused on the title," states Chargers Head Coach John Randle who led Camosun to PACWEST Gold in 2011 as well as two silver medal finishes (2009, 2012) and a bronze (2010).
The 2013 Chargers squad is comprised of four returnees and three new recruits. Leading the pack is veteran Jarred Callbeck who earned a plethora of awards in 2012 including PACWEST Men's Golf Player of the Year, PACWEST All-Star, CCAA All-Canadian and Academic All-Canadian.
This summer, Callbeck finished Top 10 in the Canadian Amateur Golf Championships in Victoria, shooting a 190-yard hole-in-one on the 16th hole at the Gorge Vale Golf Club. "I ended up tied for ninth which I'm very happy with," commented Callbeck. "The ace was also an awesome bonus!"
Joining Callbeck on the list of returnees is Jared Hundza (Pacific Christian), Grant Maskiewich (Smithers) and Brady Stead (Vernon). All four finished in the Top 20 Individual Men in the Conference with Callbeck #1, Hundza #10, Maskiewich #11 and Stead #17.
Three first-year players will round out the 2013 Chargers team. The trio of rookies include Jamie Curiston (Mt. Baker, Cranbrook), Mike Flegel (A.E. Peacock, Moose Jaw, Sask.) and Martin Kim (G.P. Vanier).
The PACWEST Golf season gets underway this weekend with the first tournament of four hosted by Vancouver Island University at the Morningstar Golf Club in Parksville, September 7-8.
