March 9, 2010
The Camosun College Chargers women settled for silver tonight as the UBC-Okanagan Heat pulled out a 69-67 win to take the BCCAA Provincial Championship title.
The Chargers came out blasting and dominated the game in the first half, outscoring the Heat in both quarters and ending the half with an 11 point lead (44-33). UBCO answered back in the third outscoring the Chargers 17-10 and closing their deficit to four points. The Heat stole the lead early in the fourth quarter turning the game in their favor, 58-56. The remainder of the final frame was a nail-biter but in the end, the Chargers were unable to fend off their opponents and the score ended 69-67 in favor of UBCO at the buzzer.
Second-year wing/post Chelsea McMullen earned her third Player of the Game award, contributing 21 points and 5 rebounds to Camosun’s cause.
Despite losing the gold, the Chargers will be going to Nationals via a wild card. As hosts of this year’s CCAA National Championships, UBCO receives an automatic berth, leaving a spot for the next most qualified BC team.
The Chargers return to Victoria to begin preparations for the CCAA Nationals hosted by the University of BC-Okanagan in Kelowna, March 18-20.
