Chargers advance to CCAA Championship semi-finals
March 12, 2010
The Camosun College Chargers chalked up a sensational win last night by defeating defending CCAA Men’s National Volleyball Champions, the Grant MacEwan University Griffins in a thrilling five-set battle advancing the squad to today’s semi-final round.
Despite a strong start and having the home court advantage, Grant MacEwan could not keep Camosun down and the Chargers took the win 3-2 (15-25; 25-23; 25-27; 25-23; 15-8).
While the Griffins came out blasting in the first set with aggressive serving and great blocking, the Chargers utilized the time to shake off some nervous tension and get focused. Camosun took over the second set thanks to an early five point run served up by second-year left side Blaine Barron (Maple Ridge) and the team’s successful outside setting and attacking strategy.
Set number three was a barn-burner, providing Camosun with a short set-back as Grant MacEwan stole the set by two points late in the game. Despite losing five serving opportunities before the 17 point mark, the Griffins went head to head with the Chargers trading points in a see-saw battle to the finish. Returning to the aggressive style of play demonstrated in the first set, the defending champs took the set 27-25.
The battle continued in the fourth with the two teams tied seven times before Camosun could maintain the lead starting at 20-19 and finishing the set 25-23.
Although both sides played aggressively, it was the Chargers who surged ahead half-way through the final set, winning 15-8 and leaving the home team and home crowd with a heartbreaking loss.
Third-year right side Aleks Saddlemyer (Parklands) earned Player of the Match honors for his 12 kills, 7 digs and 3 blocks.
With last night’s win, the Chargers advance to meet the second-seeded SAIT Trojans this evening at 8pm MST/7pm Pacific in the semi-finals of the CCAA Men’s National Volleyball Championships.
