Chargers LogoChargers women hoopsters fall to #3 after eating their first loss of the season

The Camosun College Chargers were fed their first loss of the season this past Friday night by the University of Northern BC Timberwolves at the Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre in Prince George. The nation’s top seeded women’s basketball crew was outscored and outworked by UNBC who took the game with a convincing score of 65-47.

“It was good for us,” commented Chargers head coach Brett Westcott on the loss. “The team got their butts handed to them so maybe they'll be more receptive to the fact that the way we're playing is not the way to be successful. We're not very good if we don't work hard and execute, and I thought UNBC outworked us tremendously,” added Westcott.

Coach Westcott proved himself right, and on Saturday the Chargers redeemed themselves with a 68-58 win over the T-wolves. The come-back win wasn’t enough to help the Camosun squad maintain their first place national ranking, and this morning it was officially announced that the team has fallen to third place in the CCAA. With a record of 10-1, the Chargers continue their hold on the number one slot in the BCCAA provincial standings.

On the men’s side, the Chargers could not obtain the split they needed, losing both their weekend games to UNBC. With a 2-9 record and sitting ninth in the BCCAA standings, the Chargers still have a chance to make the playoffs, albeit a slim one.

“Mathematically, we still have a shot,” said Chargers head coach Craig Price. “But realistically, we’d have to win our next six games and there would have to be some major upsets in the current standings for us to get to there. Looking at it optimistically, anything is possible!”

While finishing the season strong is high on the Chargers’ list of goals, Coach Price is adamant about making sure the team ends the year with dignity and self-respect.

"It’s all about pride,” commented Price. “The entire team feels like we have let many games get away from us this year. We are looking to build confidence, pride and respect into everything we do. sWe want a winning program for everyone, regardless of our present circumstances. This level of work ethic and attention to detail must be in everything we do.”

Up next for the Camosun basketball teams is a double-header weekend in Squamish against BCCAA new-comers, the Quest University Kermodes.
