Camosun men sign six recruits for 2009-2010 basketball season

June 12, 2009

Chargers LogoThe Camosun College Chargers are pleased to announce the signing of six student-athletes to the Chargers program for the upcoming men’s basketball season. Joining the 2009-2010 squad are Ryan Erikson (Esquimalt), Josh Moule (Courtney), Michael Steele (North Vancouver), Rob Schellenberg (Winnipeg, Manitoba), Andrew Cavin (Victoria) and Blake Mansbridge (Nanaimo).

"This year's recruiting class is an underrated group of individuals,” commented Chargers head coach Craig Price. “While our team is young, each player has a lot to contribute, along with the character and desire to be competitive and improve.”

Ryan EriksonRyan Erikson is a 6’6’ forward who will be graduating this coming June from Esquimalt Secondary. In his Grade 11 year, Ryan was named the defensive player of the Vancouver Island Classic, a 1st Team Island All-Star and a 2nd Team All-Star at the AA Provincials. In his graduating year playing post, Ryan averaged over 20 points and 10 rebounds and was named a 1st Team All-Star at the Island All-Star game.

"Ryan is a tremendous person,” said Coach Price. “His determination to be successful on the court and in the classroom was a major factor in our choice to recruit him. His ability to play inside - outside will make us tougher to defend and he can play either forward position, so his versatility will be a big help to our young team.”

Josh MouleSomeone to watch this year is Josh Moule, a 6’4” wing player who joins the Chargers after a year away from basketball. Josh played with the 2007-08 North Island AA Champions, the Mark R. Isfeld Ice, with returning Chargers Tyler Olsen and Scott Meredith. Josh was named a 1st Team All-Star at the Carihi High Invitational and the Victoria City Police Tournament and was also named to the 2nd Team in the Island All-Star game.

“Josh’s ability to handle the ball, finish at the hoop and shoot from the perimeter is really going to help improve our guard play,” commented Coach Price. “He’s grown physically and matured as a person and basketball player and he’s going to surprise some people this year!”

Mike SteeleMichael Steele is a 6’5” forward graduating with honours from Windsor Secondary School in North Vancouver. The former Duke helped the Windsor program to three AA Provincial Championships and averaged 24 points and 11 rebounds his senior year. In addition to being an All-Star at the Victoria Police City Tournament, the St. Thomas More Chancellor’s Classic and the Southridge Slam, Michael was named the North Shore AA MVP for 2009.

“Michael is an incredibly mature and self-sufficient individual,” claimed Coach Price. “I think his leadership, courage, resolve and work ethic will be marvellous examples for our young team. Michael is very coachable and gets his points within the flow of the game.”

Rob SchellenbergA standout for the Oak Park Raiders in the 2008-2009 season, 6’5” forward Rob Schellenberg was the team’s leading scorer and an outstanding rebounder, leading the team to third place in the 2009 Manitoba Provincial Championship and receiving the MVP award in the Raiders semi-final game. Rob was a 1st Team All-Star in the BSSI Tournament, the Winnipeg Invitational Tournament and was named the Raiders Invitational Tournament MVP.

Coach Price described Rob as a spectacular asset to the Chargers men’s basketball team. “Rob is very self-reliant, versatile, and resilient. He is an honours student and has high school championship and provincial team experience. This is exactly the type of student-athlete we are trying to add to our program. Signing Rob is remarkable when you consider that Universities and Colleges across Western Canada were trying to recruit him!”

After a layoff due to injury, Andrew Cavin has agreed to join the Chargers. In 2005, Andrew was named the Rupert Common Male Athlete of the Year at Saint Michael’s University School. “Ian Hyde-Lay once called Andrew Cavin one of the best athletes he had ever coached,” commented Coach Price. “I would say that is extraordinary praise from a man who has coached NBA and Euro League talent. Andrew is older and more mature than most of the players we usually have a chance to acquire. I hope he will make a tremendous impact in the locker room and on the floor.”

Blake MansbridgeTransferring from the Vancouver Island University Mariners is Blake Mansbridge, a former Wellington and Dover Bay standout who averaged 20 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists while leading the Dover Bay Dolphins to the AAA Provincial tournament. Blake is a former member of the BC Provincial program and an honours student. “Blake is a quality perimeter player and I hope his outside touch will help us this year. He is going to have every opportunity to add a high skill level to our backcourt,” said Coach Price.

“Our 2009 recruiting class will enhance our program with players that will help us maintain a healthy competitiveness within the squad and strive towards the success that has been built here at Camosun,” Coach Price concluded.
