Chargers LogoChargers host hardwood holiday classics

December 23, 2009

The Camosun College Chargers basketball and volleyball teams will be welcoming some familiar faces as well as first-time competitors to the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence this holiday season as they host their annual Christmas and New Year’s Classic tournaments.

The Chargers 4th Annual Christmas Classic Basketball Tournament on December 28-30 will feature four of the top six teams in the BCCAA on the women’s side and is set to provide fans with a healthy helping of hoop action while UVic takes to the road and the high-schools take a break from their scheduled play.

“We’re pleased to be the only game in town during that time,” said Brett Westcott, Head Coach of the Chargers women’s basketball program. “As the only BCCAA college hosting a tournament over the Christmas break, we are providing a great opportunity for teams wanting to work out the exam kinks and get ready for the start of league play in January.”

Men's and women's teams set to hit the hardwood include the VIU Mariners, Kwantlen College Eagles, Capilano University Blues, Langara College Falcons, and from Bellingham, Washington, the North West Indian College.

Camosun will continue filling the holidays with hard court action on January 1-2 with the Chargers Men’s Volleyball New Year’s Classic which will feature some of the best CCAA players in the nation including Camosun’s own Aleks Saddlemyer (Parklands), Josh Coutts (Claremont) and Brent Hall (Lindsey Thurber, Red Deer).

The focal point of the tournament for many volleyball aficionados will be the final match scheduled for 7:00pm on Saturday, January 2nd when the Chargers take on the “Gentlemen’s Club” team featuring an All-Star and All-Canadian line-up of Camosun Alumni including international starts such as Matt Carere, Adam Parkes and Dan Casey, Canada Games Beach Volleyball Gold medalist Domingo Miguel, former Chargers team captain and five-year stand out Dan Goodburn and a host of other players.

The New Year's Classic will also feature some of the best young athletes in BC in their first exposure to college-level volleyball. Competing CCAA teams include the Grande Praire Wolves (Alberta) and the Capilano Blues.

The Chargers women’s volleyball team is also preparing to entertain fans over the holidays with action-packed matches scheduled for Sunday, January 3rd against teams comprised of Camosun Alumni and former Victoria Volleyball Association players. Matches will take place from 10:00am to 5pm.
