The Camosun College Chargers golf team celebrated its first tournament win of the season this past weekend at the Camosun Invitational - BCCAA Tournament #2 held at the Arbutus Ridge Golf and Country Club.

Golf team celebrates first win of the season. The four-time BCCAA gold medal winning Chargers golf program went through a big transition last year as former head coach, Troy Dunning, handed the reigns of the program over to PGA Professional John Randle.

Coach Randle and his team finished the 2008 season just outside the medals and disappointingly, without a win, but if this past weekend’s results are any indication of how the team will perform for the remainder of the year, it just might be another banner year for the program.

The Chargers finished this past weekend’s two-day tournament with a total of 588, three strokes ahead of last week's leader and defending BCCAA Champions, the University of the Fraser Valley. UBC-Okanagan came in third with a final score of 598.

It was a special win for Chargers head coach John Randle—his first tournament win since taking over the program last Fall. Despite the personal victory, it was the student-athletes who Coach Randle had the most praise for. “I’m really proud of all the guys—they stuck in there, fought hard and finished strong,” he said.

The Chargers currently lead the BCCAA field of nine with a two-tournament total of 1197, leading UFV by six strokes and third place team, UBC-Okanagan by 13. With only four tournaments making up the BCCAA season, the team is in the lead at the half-way point.

First-year Charger Brett Webster (Yale Secondary, Abbotsford) is the BCCAA League Leader with an individual low score of 290 strokes over two tournaments.

This weekend, the team travels to Thompson Rivers University (Kamloops) for BCCAA Tournament #3 at "The Dunes" Golf Course, Oct. 3-4.

When asked what his goals and expectations are for this weekend’s competition, Coach Randle replied, “Like always, if they try hard on every shot, I’m happy.”
