Chargers LogoChargers golf team assembles for 2009

September 16, 2009

Back for his second year as head coach of the Camosun College Chargers golf team, PGA Professional John Randle took on his first challenge of the season this past weekend – assembling his 2009 team.

“Twenty-four keen and talented students made their way up to Arbutus Ridge for try-outs this weekend,” remarked Coach Randle. “It was an outstanding group and making the final selections was not an easy task.”

The Chargers’ 2009 eight-man roster includes third-year veteran, Kevin Walz (Qualicum Beach) plus newcomers Matt Tindale (Peterborough, ON), Zander Ritson (Victoria), Brett Webster (Vancouver), Terrance Drader (Kamloops), Justin Deol (Victoria), Josh Benloulou (Salt Spring Island) and Beau Beveridge (Victoria).
Last year, the Chargers finished fourth out of nine teams in the BCCAA, just two points short of Bronze Medalists and Island rivals, the Vancouver Island University Mariners. The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades finished in first place with Thompson River University Wolf Pack taking second.

While the defending top three teams have each confirmed the return of their five core players to start the 2009 season, an undaunted Coach Randle stated that his expectations for the Chargers this year are high and that the team will be counting on consistency to bring home the wins.

“While we have lost three of our starters including our number one player from last year, I think our new team members are very talented. As with any season, I am heading into this year with the goal of winning the league.”

He added, “The biggest difference between winning the league last year and finishing fourth was that we tended to make big numbers on one or two holes a round and that ruined a lot of good rounds. I will be stressing the importance of keeping the ball in play of the tee and minimizing those double and triple bogeys. Steady play will give us a chance to win every event. If the guys give all they have and work hard, I know we will do just fine.”

The Chargers open the season with BCCAA Tournament #1 hosted by Selkirk College at the Castlegar Golf Club, September 19-20.
