A select group of Grade 11 and 12 volleyball players from Victoria will be making the trek in from the summer beach courts to the indoor hard court next Monday as the Camosun College Chargers women’s volleyball team holds its first Elite Clinic session at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence, August 17 between 6-8pm.

Participants include 16 young women from Lambrick, Stelly’s, Reynolds, Belmont, Mt. Doug, Oak Bay and Timberline (Campbell River). The participants also play club for the Victoria Volleyball Association’s 17U and 16U teams and Titans 16U as well as the Campbell River Crush.

“I invited players that I scouted over the last season,” commented Chargers head coach Alison Hitesman. “They are individuals who are already well rounded skill-wise and who possess a positive attitude, solid team skills and the desire to be competitive.”

The Elite Clinic will focus on providing participants with “beyond the basics” training while addressing a number of community and team related goals.

“The Elite Clinic is an opportunity to teach local players a higher set of skills which will raise the quality of skills and tactics of the young women who play in our local high school and club programs,” said Coach Hitesman. “Vancouver is quickly surpassing Victoria due to the large number of girls in the sport and if we want to stay competitive, we need to ensure our local high school girls stay current and more proficient.”

Coach Hitesman added, “The Clinic will also provide athletes with an opportunity to scrape off the summer rust and be primed for a strong start to the high school season with new tools added to their game. Participants will also learn about the post-secondary opportunities that are available to them as well as what it takes to be a college-level player. For local college recruits and vets, the Elite Clinic is a way to get early touches on the ball, interact and develop relationships with our community volleyball players, increase the team’s profile, raise funds for scholarships and gain hands-on experience being a coach.”

Assisting Coach Hitesman with the Elite Clinic training is Marty Donatelli (former Chargers head coach) and a number of the Camosun College veterans including fourth-year returnees Laura Ouilette (Lambrick Park) and Caitlin Weir (Wellington, Nanaimo) and third-year returnee Bethany Farnell (Highland, Comox). Coach Hitesman’s new assistant, Nadia Reider, will be making her first official appearance at the Clinic. Reider is a grad from York University and was a CIS All-Star.

The Chargers Women’s Volleyball Elite Clinic will run every Monday and Thursday evening, 6-8pm beginning Monday, August 17 and ending on Thursday, September 3 at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence (4371 Interurban Road).
