Chargers celebrate seventh at Nationals
Despite missing the medals at the CCAA National Championships this year, the Camosun College Chargers have much to celebrate as they ended their first appearance at the big event with a seventh-place finish, defeating the St. Thomas University Tommies from Fredericton (NB), 73-47.
The Tommies opened up today's game with an 11 point lead, ending the first quarter 25-14. Although Camosun came back in the second quarter, outscoring the St. Thomas 15-10, they remained behind on the scoreboard with the Tommies ahead at the end of the first half, 35-29.
Half two saw the Chargers in full retaliation, breaking the third quarter curse that plagued the team in its first two games of the Championships.
Entering the fourth quarter, Camosun outscored the Tommies 20-9, giving them a 49-44 lead. The Chargers then blew past the Tommies ending the game 26 points ahead, 73-47.
Player of the Game honours went to second-year post from Claremont, Teresa Hartick of Camosun and Jillian Lamoreau from St. Thomas.
The seventh place National finish stands as the Chargers women's basketball program's best performance to date. There was a time not so long ago twhen the Chargers could not even finish seventh provincially. The team has come far under head coach Brett Westcott's guidance. No doubt the Chargers have entered a new era ... and they will be back!
