Camosun hoopsters take it step by step
December 9, 2009
Closing out the first half of the BCCAA season with a fourth-place standing, the Camosun Chargers women’s basketball team is spending the December break in the gym with a focus on the year ahead and step by step preparations to secure their position in the playoffs.
The Chargers squad, which is composed of a handful of vets and a majority of student-athletes competing in their rookie year, is struggling to put forth the consistent effort that was characteristic of last year’s Championship team.
“We are getting better, but the improvements are in small steps,” commented Camosun head coach Brett Westcott. “We either need to take more steps or bigger steps if we hope to improve enough to be guaranteed a top spot in the playoffs at this point in the season.”
The two-time BCCAA Coach of the Year is adamant that the team needs to become tougher defensively and more efficient offensively.
“We cannot afford to get outworked at either the offensive or defensive ends in any game and that has happened at times,” he said. ”We have to make teams struggle to score and we have to cut down on silly mistakes and turnovers to be a consistent threat in our league. If we can do those things, then we have a chance to do well as the season moves forward.”
Helping the Chargers in their quest to secure a top spot playoff berth are third-year Teresa Hartrick (Claremont) and second-year Chelsea McMullen (Kelly Road, Prince George), who are expected to provide significant scoring in the post. The return of veteran point guard Kate Carlson will also give the team some experience in the backcourt and take some of the pressure off athletes like second-year Lambrick Park grad Kymber Gale who carried the backcourt load for Camosun over the first semester.
“While we have the potential to finish in the upper tier of the league, we could also crash and not make playoffs,” added Coach Westcott. “Our season's success will depend upon how much we can improve the next month in practice.”
In addition to practicing over the break, the women hoopsters will be teaming with the Camosun men to host the Chargers’ 4th Annual Christmas Holiday Tournament, December 28-30 at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence.
