Chargers basketball teams gear up for season openers in Abbotsford
November 4, 2009
The Camosun College Chargers are gearing up to travel to Abbotsford this weekend as they take on the Columbia Bible Bearcats in the first league games of the 2009-2010 BCCAA basketball season.
With the majority of last season’s starting line-up gone, the Chargers women are struggling to address a number of challenges.
“With 11 first-year players, we are still looking for a leader to develop in the team,” stated Camosun head coach Brett Westcott. “Gradually the players are getting more comfortable with the systems we run, but they are still a long way away from being ready to compete at a high level as our league opening games are quickly coming up on the radar."
A bad run of injuries has only added to the team’s development process so far this season. “We have had seven team members miss games due to a variety of injuries,” said Coach Westcott. “We are hoping the majority will be recovered enough to resume practice this week and start to make up for lost time."
Despite the challenges, Coach Westcott is not counting the team out of the running by any means and as he sees it, this year’s league is wide open. “Most of the teams have had a large number of personnel changes so whoever can learn their lessons best the quickest has a chance this year,” he explained. “So far this season, you would have to say VIU is playing the best right now and UBC-O would be another co-favorite as those two schools have the most experience and frontcourt size in the league. Our goal is to keep improving and hope we can play well enough in the first half of the league schedule that we still have a chance in the second semester to cause some trouble in the playoffs."
On the men’s side, Camosun head coach Craig Price is working diligently with his squad – which is also composed of a majority of rookies.
"This year's recruiting class is an underrated group of individuals,” commented Chargers head coach Craig Price. “While our team is young, each player has a lot to contribute, along with the character and desire to be competitive and improve.”
The Chargers men and women will be busy preparing for their first league games throughout the week before facing the CBC Bearcats in Abbotsford.
