Chargers basketball teams win four on the road

Host final home games of the season Chargers Logo

The Camosun College Chargers basketball teams won all four of their games quite handedly this past weekend against the Quest University Kermodes in Squamish, with the closest game having a 10-point spread.

This weekend, the Chargers anticipate an exciting double-header match up at the PISE gym as they host the Langara College Falcons this weekend in their final home games for the 2008-09 season.

The top-ranked BCCAA Chargers women have been drawing in record crowds since the beginning of the year – at times, outnumbering audience membership at the highly-publicized University of Victoria women’s basketball games.

And it’s no wonder why. Chargers head coach Brett Westcott and his crew of dedicated coaching staff and student-athletes have virtually reinvented women’s basketball at Camosun and the fans love it!

The Chargers have come a long way from their 0-7 start to the 2006-07 season. To date, the team is 12-1 and one of the most feared in the league. Under Westcott’s leadership, the squad has been ranked #1 in the BCCAA for six consecutive weeks since the second week of league competition. Earlier this month, the Chargers enjoyed the notoriety of being the number one team in the nation for two weeks in January before slipping to third spot following their first loss of the season to the University of Northern BC Timberwolves on January 23rd.

On Friday night, the Chargers will recognize several veteran players who will be leaving Camosun following the 2008-09 academic year. These include third-year student-athletes Kendall Allen (Lambrick Park), Kate Carlson (Spectrum), Jill Proudfoot (Oak Bay) and Julia Fisher (Cowichan Secondary), as well as fourth-year vet Ashley MacKay (Claremont) and fifth-year student-athlete Heidi Padjen (Lake Cowichan Secondary). Fourth-year Jeff Krawetz (Lambrick) from the men’s team will also be recognized.

While it is expected that the Chargers women will take the fifth-place Falcons for two games this weekend, the 4-9 Chargers men will need to come to the floor with a big desire to win against Langara who is 8-5 and in third place in the BCCAA standings.

Chargers head coach Craig Price was pleased with the pair of wins the team earned on the road against Quest University last weekend and is hoping that fire will ignite some renewed energy into the group over the course of the next two weekends. “I’m happy about the wins,” he commented. “I’m hoping the guys will take some of the momentum we had from last week and put it towards our next three games. They’re going to have to want it really bad to win against Langara and VIU.”

Catch the Chargers as they play their FINAL league games of the season this weekend at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence (4371 Interurban Road).
