Chargers take top spot in BCCAA women’s basketball standings
November 20, 2008
The Camosun College Chargers women’s basketball team is wasting no time in taking the lead this season, earning the number one spot in the British Columbia Colleges’ Athletic Association (BCCAA) standings and the third spot in the Canadian Colleges’ Athletic Association (CCAA) rankings.
While BCCAA basketball is only approaching its third week of league competition, the Chargers see the early lead as part of their development and an achievement from where they stood last year (#2 provincially and #5 nationally).
Chargers head coach Brett Westcott commented, “We have shown we are competitive with the other teams in the province when we are focused and prepared to play. I think we still have a long way to go in our development as a team. We need to be more consistent and we have to realize when you are highly-regarded every team comes ready to play against you. Also, we have been ravaged with injuries which has taken away some of our depth so if we can get healthy for the second half of the season we may be better able to say whether or not we are reaching our potential as a team."
This past weekend, the Chargers women annihilated the Columbia Bible Bearcats in separate games at home on Friday and Saturday (90-30 and 97-22 respectively). While a more-than humbling experience for the Bearcats, the Chargers took away more than two wins.
CBC is where our group was three years ago,” stated Coach Westcott. We were struggling for a win somewhere and getting hammered every weekend. At some point in the future, if they can get some players, CBC will recover and start to be more competitive again. The most important thing for us last weekend, was that we did not fall backward. At the same time, we did not want to embarass anybody as we have been on the other side of games like that in the past."
On the surface, it looks like the Chargers have a good chance of securing two more wins this weekend on the road as they meet the Kwantlen Polytechnic University Eagles. To date, the Eagles have lost all four of their games and the team is ranked at the bottom of the league. If the Chargers pull out this weekend’s wins, it will be the first time in Chargers history that a team has remained undefeated throughout the first half of the season. But Coach Westcott isn’t taking anything for granted .
"Kwantlen is a big, athletic and physical team and they will create problems for every team in the league,” reported Westcott. “They have had the toughest league schedule so far playing both Capilano and UBC-O on the road and three of their four games have been within eight points. They will win some games this season against good teams; I just hope it does not happen this weekend."
The Chargers men and women travel to Surrey this weekend for their final games of the Fall 2008 semester.
