The Camosun College Chargers men’s volleyball team hit the ground running this past weekend winning back to back matches on the road and toppling the Canadian Colleges’ Athletic Association’s top ranked team, the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades.

“This past weekend’s wins were big for us and will really help us get back in the mix,” stated Chargers head coach Charles Parkinson. “Knocking off the number one team in the country in three straight sets was a big accomplishment and the boys were thrilled!”

The Chargers won both their weekend matches 3-0. On Friday night, the Columbia Bible Bearcats fell to the Chargers 25-14, 25-16, 25-17. The Chargers took the enthusiasm from their first win of the season to defeat the number one nationally ranked Fraser Valley Cascades on their home turf 25-22, 25-23, 25-22.

For Coach Parkinson and his team, the wins could not have come at a better time. Losing their first three matches of the league season was a brutal beginning with two of the matches going to five very close sets, but the Chargers are putting it all into perspective.

“It has taken us a couple of weekends to find our form and it's now time for us to add to the win side of the ledger,” commented Parkinson. “We have played very well so far, as the scores of some of our games indicate. The difference against UFV was that we finished each set, playing very tough volleyball after 20 points and limiting our errors. The other thing we did well was play hard for three sets in a row. We did not coast at any point in the match, even when we were up two sets to zero and ahead in the third.”

This weekend, the Chargers have the home court advantage, taking on the College of the Rockies and Selkirk College.

“COTR is a solid team, having pushed many of the best teams in the league, said Parkinson. “We have to continue to serve well, limiting the number of offensive options that they have. On our side of the net, we must block with discipline which will allow our defense to create transition opportunities for us. Perhaps most of all, though, we have to play with the passion and confidence that we saw last weekend. We are capable of winning every match left in the first half of the season as long as we play to our potential, and I expect every player to be ready to contribute to the absolute best of their ability.”

The Chargers men’s and women’s volleyball teams play their last matches of the Fall 2008 semester this weekend at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence (4371 Interurban Road).
