Chargers golf team hits the links
RCGA Canadian University/College Championships May 27-30
May 23, 2008
Catch the Camosun College Chargers golf team as they join 30 teams from across Canada battle for the title at the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA) Canadian University/College Championships, May 27-30 at the Cordova Bay Golf Club.
“The four-day championship is the Super Bowl of Canadian University and Collegiate golf tournaments in the country,” stated Chargers head coach Troy Dunning. “Spectators will be able to see some of the best post-secondary golfers in Canada hit the links right here in Victoria.”
The RCGA launched the tournament seven years ago as part of its strategic plan to cultivate interest and participation in the sport of golf amongst Canadian post-secondary students and to encourage domestic students to stay in Canada versus going to the United States. This year’s event features 20 men’s teams and 11 women’s.
The Chargers made their first appearance at the tournament in 2005 at the Duncan Meadows Golf Club and finished a very respectable 10 out of 21 Canadian colleges and universities.
Having earned a silver medal at the Canadian Colleges’ Athletic Association Championship (CCAA) and the gold medal at the British Columbia Colleges’ Athletic Association (BCCAA) Championship in the 2007-08 season, the Chargers are heading into the tournament focused and confident.
“We are anticipating a strong field and are pleased to be representing Camosun at this high-profile national event,” commented Dunning. “Having the tournament in our own back yard is definitely an advantage. We feel our consistent performance and knowledge of the course will help us finish strong, but the team that everyone will be keeping their eye on is UBC. The team’s recent NAIA victory was very impressive and they won the UVic Turkey Shootout this past fall at Cordova Bay by 17 shots over only two rounds.”
Players to watch are Cory Renfrew from UBC as well as Parker Lilly and Mitch Evanecz from the University of Victoria. The top participating collegiate players include reigning CCAA champion, James Castle from Humber College and Camosun’s own Brad Clapp and Phil Kondrak. Clapp earned the CCAA bronze medal and the BCCAA gold medal for his individual performance last year while Kondrak brought home CCAA silver and BCCAA bronze. Clapp and Kondrak will be joined by teammates Eric Smith, Ryan Tofani and Lee Alarie.
The RCGA Canadian University/College Championship begins on Monday, May 26 with the official practice round, the opening flag raising ceremony and welcome reception. First round action begins on Tuesday, May 27.
