The Camosun College Chargers golf team started the 2008 British Columbia College’s Athletic Association (BCCAA) league season with a third place tie with Island rivals, the Vancouver Island University (VIU)Mariners this past weekend in Castlegar . At the first of four tournaments, the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) placed first with a two-day total of 594 while Thompson Rivers University placed a close second at 596. Camosun and VIU both finished the weekend with a tournament score of 608.

“Thanks go out to the host school, Selkirk College and the host course, Castlegar Golf Club,” stated Chargers head coach John Randle. “The tournament was run very well and the course was in great condition. Congratulations are also due to UFV, the winners of the tournament.”

Mr. Randle made his team selections early last week. Returning to the Chargers Fall 2008 roster are second-year student-athletes Kevin Walz and Phil Kondrak (CCAA Silver Medalist and BCCAA Bronze Medalist) and third-year veteran Ryan Tofani. Starting their rookie season with the Chargers are Tyler Kuyvenhoven (Claremont), Stefano Sidonio (Rockridge, West Vancouver), Callum Ashby (McMath, Richmond), Mat Hennick (Inglewood, Kenmore, WA) and Andrew Chapman.

“For the first event, with two of our team members never having seen the course, the guys played quite well. As is often the case with younger players, they play good golf for 14 of the 18 holes and often make big scores on 4 holes, resulting in a high final score,” commented Coach Randle. “Phil Kondrak was our best player on the weekend. He had a great chance to win the individual title with nine holes to play but a couple of errant drives and the putts not dropping led to a fourth place finish.”

With a total of nine teams in the mix this year, the BCCAA golf league has not only expanded in size, but it is predicted that the calibre of play will rise significantly as well.

Looking forward to a highly competitive season, the Chargers are focused on their short game and their mental game. “I am confident the team will continue to improve. While a tie for third isn't a terrible result, I am looking forward to better results as the year goes along,” Randle stated.

The Chargers’ next scheduled competition is BCCAA league tournament #2, hosted by VIU at the Nanaimo Golf Club this weekend, September 20-21.
