Chargers men’s golf team place third at Swan-e-set

May 15, 2007

The Camosun College Chargers men’s golf team placed third out of nine participating schools at the 2007 Douglas College Invitational Golf Tournament held May 13-14 in Pitt Meadows.

Eight teams from the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) joined the Chargers in hitting the links at the picturesque Swan-e-set Bay Resort and Country Club designed by the legendary Lee Trevino.

Collegiate teams from Washington State included Bellevue, Skagit Valley, Tacoma, Olympic (Bremerton), Walla Walla and Columbia Basin (Pasco). Mainland teams from Douglas College and the University College of the Fraser Valley (UCFV) also participated.

Chargers Head Coach Troy Dunning is pleased with his group’s performance and the overall results. “Placing third is very respectable considering the NWAACC schools are finishing up eight weeks in a row of tournament competition while our guys have not even competed since last Fall. Despite never having even seen the course before Sunday’s round, Lee Alarie had a terrific second day shooting the lowest score of 72 – just one shot over the lowest round of the tournament which was achieved by Richard Lee from Bellevue.”

UCFV placed first with a two-day total of 615; Walla Walla took second with a score of 618; Camosun placed third, shooting a total of 625.

Chargers individual scores are as follows:

Camosun College Chargers Round 1 Round 2 Totals
Brad Clapp 76 74 150
Eric Smith 77 80 157
Lee Alarie 77 72 149
Matthew Kelly 84 85 169
Jon Wiegner 93 87 180
  314 311 625

Coach Dunning and returning Chargers Brad Clapp, Eric Smith and Lee Alarie look forward to the 2007-08 season where Camosun will compete in the British Columbia Colleges’ Athletic Association (BCCAA) conference.

“We are very excited about competing this Fall and battling it out with UCFV for next season’s BCCAA Championship,” remarked Dunning.

The Chargers golf team try-outs are scheduled for September 7-8 at Cordova Bay Golf Club. For more information, contact Troy Dunning at 250–370–4168 or dunning@camosun.bc.ca
