Chargers and Braefoot charge up the hoops in Victoria

The Camosun College Chargers have teamed up with the Braefoot Community Association to offer a host of activities to entice young basketball players of all levels to get out this summer and enjoy working on their skills.

In May, coaches and student-athletes from the Chargers men’s and women’s programs teamed up with the Braefoot Community Association to bring basketball to young children in the Victoria area in the form of free lunch time basketball camps. To date, youngsters from eighteen elementary and middle schools have benefited from this free program that features skill development, contests, prizes and a whole lot of fun! The hour-long mini camps will run to the end of June.

The Chargers have also teamed up with the Braefoot Community Association to offer recreational and elite level basketball camps throughout July and August. Offered through Braefoot for the past 14 years, the ever-popular Hoopla Basketball Camps will offer Victoria youth the opportunity to have fun in the sun while receiving top quality instruction provided by the Camosun College Chargers coaching staff and student-athletes.

Hoopla Basketball offers two types of camps

Hoop Stars, Dribblers and Slam Dunk Camps are recreational camps designed to provide fun to boys and girls wanting to participate in the game of basketball.

Get Charged Camps are for those players looking to take their game to the next level. This elite camp has a high-intensity focus and is geared towards players wishing to develop their individual skills.

Featured Hoopla Camp coaches include Claremont grads Ashley MacKay and Max Bell. Last year, MacKay was named a British Columbia Colleges’ Athletic Association (BCCAA) Championship All-Star for her stellar performance at Provincials and was one of the conference’s league leaders for points and rebounds throughout the season. During high school, Max Bell worked his way on to the senior boys’ roster after being cut from the team in Grades 9 and 10. Bell provides a great example of where a strong work ethic and determination can take you. Not only did he make the team in Grades 11 and 12, but in his graduating year he was named a Vancouver Island All-Star. Bell has also earned leadership status at Camosun as co-captain of the 2007-08 Chargers squad.
