Tips for getting support
- Discuss the major family events that will occur while you are a student, and how your student responsibilities can be considered in planning these events.
- Develop a plan to be sure some of the family duties you’re usually responsible for are assigned to others.
- Don’t expect others to complete household chores exactly the way you would!
- Look for other supports if you can’t get the help you need from family: counselling, student groups and clubs, peers in your classes, supportive instructors, etc.; talk to others and you’ll find that the challenges you’re facing are shared.
- If you are working in groups, plan to select partners (if possible) who will commit to projects, timelines, communication, etc. to the same extent to which you are committed;
- Think of someone with whom you can keep in touch in person or via email, to help keep you on track and encourage you when you become discouraged (an “Accountability Relationship”).
- Learn techniques to help you manage your stress.
- The Camosun Counselling Centre is available to help.
