Visit the library to get your Camosun College Library card. This card also acts as you official Camosun College ID. Your photograph will be taken when the card is issued. Provide library staff with your email address in order to receive courtesy notices about overdues and holds pickups. Ask about your PIN; your PIN is only for placing holds or renewing material online (see below for off campus access).
The Library provides access to a broad range of subscription journal/article databases and e-books. On campus you can access electronic resources (article databases and ebooks licensed by the library). Simply choose your resource.
To access these resources off campus use the same ID and password you use to log on to your PC (your College employee/Colleague number (Cxxxxxxx) and password). Your Library Account is different and is used for placing holds or renewing material online. If you have forgotten that PIN, you can request an email reminder.
The library's catalogue is available online. From the catalogue you can search by specific titles or by subject. You can place holds for items that are on loan or at the other campus. Books can be borrowed for 3 weeks; videos and journals are available for a 3 day loan; DVDs for a 1 day loan. Not finding what you need? Contact us by phone or email us at library@camosun.bc.ca
The Library's interlibrary loan (ILL) service allows Camosun faculty and staff to request books and journal articles required for teaching from other libraries.
To request an interlibrary loan:
Remember, there are many other libraries in the Greater Victoria area to which Camosun faculty have access. Visiting the local library directly is often faster than using the College's ILL service.
As a Camosun College faculty member you are entitled to an Associate Library Card at the University of Victoria. This card entitles you to borrow from the circulating collection. Access to electronic resources is not available with this card. However, you can visit the University of Victoria Library and request access on the day of your visit.
Camosun librarians are available to provide research education classes to your students. Sessions are held either in your classroom or in a booked computer lab.
When you book a class, let the librarians know what topics you want covered. A typical class covers using the library catalogue, an introduction to key electronic resources (e.g. Academic Search Complete) and tips on how to refine a research topic. It's best if the class focuses on a specific research assignment. Classes can be tailored to a specific assignment or topic.
Two week notice is appreciated. Call 3622 (Lansdowne) or 4630 (Interurban) to book a class and discuss your requirements with a librarian.
Librarians have assigned subject areas of responsibility. Contact the librarian in your field if you would like to discuss additions to the collection, specific titles, collaborative teaching projects, etc.

The library provides VHS and DVD videos for classroom use by instructors. All library videos have been purchased with the appropriate public performance rights, enabling you to use them in a classroom setting. The library catalogue lists all the videos available for booking. If the library does not own the video you require, speak to staff about arranging an inter-library loan.
Videos are booked on a first come, first served basis. Booking early means you are more likely to have the resources you want when you want them.
Library staff prefer to take pre-bookings for a whole term.
Bookings can be submitted by email or telephone:
media@camosun.bc.ca 250-370-3607 or intmedia@camosun.bc.ca 250-370-4532
If you are assigning a video for viewing outside of class you can place a video on reserve. Students can borrow the video for 2 hours and view it on library equipment.
Instructors may place library or their own materials on reserve for students. Books, photocopied articles, exams, notes or DVDs can be placed on reserve. Reserve loans are short—a minimum of 2 hours to 72 hours. The instructor determines the loan period.
To place an item on reserve, submit the materials (with a complete citation for photocopied materials) together with a Reserve Form (pdf ~ 48KB).
Student works
Student works submitted by a Department or Instructor require written copyright permission from the student. Copies of the permission form are available at the Checkout desk in the Library or print and complete the Permission to Place Student Works form (pdf ~ 40KB).
Reserve materials are processed in the order they are received. At the beginning of term allow for at least one week for processing. A maximum of three copies of a title can be placed on reserve.
If the article is available through one of the library's databases or e-journals, an e-reserve will be created. All reserves are searchable from the library's catalogue by instructor name, course name or title.
Unless otherwise requested, photocopies and personal copies will be sent back to the Instructor or the Departmental office at the end of term. Alternately, you may indicate that you wish personal copies to be added to the permanent library collection once they are removed from reserve. While we attempt to ensure the security of Instructor's materials, we are not responsible for loss or damage.

Camosun College Library welcomes gifts of books, journals and other library materials that contribute to the growth and development of its collections. The acceptance, acknowledgement and disposal of all in-kind gifts are subject to the library gifts-in-kind policy. Donation of funds to support the purchase of collections are always welcomed and are coordinated through the Camosun College Foundation.
Guidelines for the acceptance of gifts-in-kind
Gifts of library materials are accepted if the materials will enhance the library collections and support the college's learning, teaching and research needs. The library reserves the right to decline gifts. The library will dispose of donated materials not added to the collection unless the donor specifically requests return of items not accepted.
It is the responsibility of the donor to deliver gifts to the library, and pick up any items not accepted. Donors are advised to discuss their donation with the library staff first if there is any question about the appropriateness of the donation. The library considers the following items as additions to the collection:
The library does not accept:
Once a gift is accepted, the items become the sole and exclusive property of the library. As owner, the library determines how gifts are used, whether they are retained and all matters related to their use and disposition.
Letter of acknowledgement, tax receipts, gift plates
Donors must indicate their desire for a letter of acknowledgement, a tax receipt and/or gift plates at the time of donation by completing the Library gift in kind form (pdf ~ 187KB).
Donors who choose not to complete the form give the library authority to accept or dispose of the items as best suits its needs. Tax receipts are only issued for items retained by the library.
Tax receipts will not be issued for items received as complimentary copies. Items are evaluated at fair market value by a librarian using standard in-print and out-of-print bibliographic sources. A receipt issued within one year of donation may be provided as evidence of the gift's value.
In accordance with Canadian tax regulations, collections valued at more than $1,000 must be evaluated by an external appraiser. The cost of an external appraisal is borne by the donor. Tax receipts are issued by the Camosun College Foundation.
Gift plates may be placed in books; gift plates are issued by the library and list the name of the donor (person or institution).
Both campus libraries provide the following facilities and equipment:
In addition to the services detailed the college libraries provide faculty with:
