Faculty/staff profile

Counsellor

Anna Stein, International Student Counsellor

I am a first generation Canadian and was born on the traditional territories of the Musqueam people and have spent most of my life as a visitor on the beautiful Lkwungen and W̱SÁNEĆ territories. I love the diversity of the lands around us, the rich colours of the forests and the mountains, the sea, the animal life and green growth everywhere.

I hold a Master's degree in Counselling Psychology and advanced certification working with various forms of trauma. Previous to working at Camosun, I developed programming to support students with documented learning disabilities and ADHD at the University of Victoria. I have also completed the San'yas Indigenous Cultural Safety Training Program.  I have a strong appreciation for humans’ unique and diverse lived experiences. I believe that our personal stories and cultural experiences are essential aspects in the understanding of our identity and the world around us.

I have worked for over 13 years at Camosun with students who come from many cultures with diverse values, beliefs and experiences. I see my role as offering a safe space for students to reflect on who they are, amplifying strengths and resources in their life and identifying what areas are challenging. I honour that clients are their own experts, with cultural identities and lived experiences that require respect and understanding. I have lived, studied and worked - at times, in a second language - in places as diverse as Mali, France, Switzerland, Hawaii, Quebec and Guatemala. I also had the privilege for many years of hosting over 25 international students in our home.

My passion for counselling stems from a deep curiosity and desire to collaborate with others in building health, wellness, and ultimately peace within our communities. It is an honour to work through academic, personal, and cultural challenges with students here at Camosun.
