Types of counselling
We're here to help students succeed. Any Camosun student may book a appointment for free and confidential career, personal, educational or cultural counselling.
Personal Counselling
Personal counselling enables you to:
- develop skills necessary for personal change
- address issues interfering with success in college and life
- learn and apply effective coping strategies
- resolve personal difficulties
- reduce stress, manage depression, deal with grief and loss
- improve self-confidence, relationships and health
- create balanced lifestyles
Referrals are made for students requiring long-term counselling or therapy.
Educational Counselling
Educational counselling addresses matters, often of a personal nature, which directly affect your academic progress. These might include:
- college adjustment
- time management and procrastination
- learning styles
- exam or public-speaking anxiety
- educational decision-making
- conflicts in the classroom or with the instructor
- withdrawal from courses.
Cultural Counselling
Cultural counselling enables you to:
- cope with the shock of leaving your family, home and culture
- adjust to the challenges of a new life in Canada
- learn new communication and lifestyle skills
- manage stress and uncertainty
- increase your confidence in order to be successful in your college programme
Liaison with other Camosun and community resources is available and facilitated.
Peer Connections program provides cross-cultural activities and student-to-student support.
Career Counselling
With career counselling, you can learn how to:
- identify a career direction or educational programme which matches your interests, abilities, work values and preferences
- research occupations
- use labour market information
- set career goals
- make informed career and life decisions.
A number of tools are available to assist you with your career exploration. If interest or personality inventories are administered, a nominal fee for materials will be charged.
The Counselling department also maintains the Career Resource Centre which houses print, computer and web-based resources invaluable for career and educational decision-making.
