Applying to Co-op
Co-operative Education is optional for each participating program with the exceptions of Hotel & Restaurant Management, Applied Communication, Exercise & Wellness and Sport Management, where it is required.
Participating in Co-operative Education usually follows the pattern below but, if you’re unsure about how to apply or have any questions regarding the application or registration process, please contact us.
Step One – Get the Scoop
Students choosing to participate in the Co-op or Internship option offered by their program will typically:
- Attend an advertised Co-op Information Session normally organized for programs in early Fall and/or Winter
- Submit a completed Co-op Student Application Form to the campus Co-op Office
- Seek information from the Co-op office, Program Chair or School Co-op and Internship Coordinator.
If Co-op or Internship is a required portion of your program, you will be provided with the necessary information by the program and in your prerequisite preparation seminar.
Step Two – Make Your Plan
Attending a Co-op Information Session or contacting the Co-op office is the best way to learn the process followed in your program. Generally, once you have completed the Co-op Student Application Form you:
- Talk to your Program Chair, Co-op & Internship Coordinator, or an Employment Facilitator in your nearest Co-op office to determine what timeline is most appropriate for you to take COOP WEP and work term(s)
Step Three – Register for COOP WEP
- Web declare and register for the Workplace Education Preparation Seminar (COOP WEP)
If you are not sure whether you will do a work term or a full slate of classes, you can web declare and register for both using the same $175 deposit. As long as you act within the allowed time period, you can then drop whichever activities you choose without penalty. If you do register in this manner, note that the initial tuition fee statement will reflect the total cost. Depending on course scheduling and work place requirements, it may be possible to continue part time classes while on a work term.
Step Four – Qualify and Register for a Co-op or Internship Work Term
- Successfully complete the required prerequisite seminar
- Meet or exceed the minimum academic/course requirements set out by your program. Please visit your individual program site for specific details on GPA and course requirements, orientation dates, and where to obtain an application form.
- Web Declare and Register for a work term
Step Five - Secure a Placement
- Access and actively use the online student job board
- Consult with your Employment Facilitator to develop your own preferred position or to convert another existing position to a credited work term
- Earn academic credit while you work!
Registration, Fees and Deadlines
