History
Child Care Services has been funded by Camosun College since 1990. Initially there was one centre located at the Lansdowne Campus and one centre located at the Carey Road Campus. Before 1990, child care was run by a non-profit society on the two campuses. In 1990, the non-profit society was experiencing financial difficulty and asked the College to take on the administration of child care services. At that time, the perspective of the College was that access to affordable campus-based child care enhanced student access to post-secondary education. For this reason, the College assumed responsibility for child care and contributed not only the facilities and related services, but also additional funds to sustain the operations of Child Care Services. In the fall of 1994, the Camosun College Student Society held a referendum and passed a levy to help support campus-based child care. In 1995, the College received provincial government funding to construct a purpose built child care facility at the Interurban Campus, and the Carey Road centre was closed.
In 2004, Child Care Services went through an extensive financial review, as the operation was deemed too costly for the College to sustain on a long-term basis. A three-year Business Plan was developed and accepted by the Board of Governors in March 2005. The result of the Business Plan was the implementation of various cost-saving initiatives as well as additional revenues were secured from the Camosun College Student Society, Camosun College Faculty Association, CUPE 2081, and the Camosun College Exempt Employee Group.
Since that time, Child Care Services has implemented a concrete business plan and many new initiatives. The 2010-2011 child care year marked the 20th anniversary of the services under the umbrella of Camosun College. Now, past children of the services are utilizing the services for their children.
