How to get your foot in the door and keep it there
(or Soft skills are the hardest to Learn)
- Facilitator: Dr. Tom Roemer, Vice President of Strategic Development, Camosun College
Tom Roemer holds an Ed.D. from Simon Fraser University and a M.Sc. in Astrophysics from the University of Alberta. He has held the position of Dean of Trades and Technology at Camosun and Associate Dean of Sciences, Technology and Health at Okanagan College and has worked as an instructor, an IT consultant and small business owner. Originally from Bavaria, Germany, Tom is multi-lingual and enjoys learning new languages and travelling.
Having the right credentials may land you an interview or an appointment with a potential client but the right combination of hard skills and soft skills is what will make you a memorable candidate and help you seal the deal. In this session we'll discuss what soft skills are and the importance of strong communication, networking and presentation. We'll also talk about some of the ways in which you can evaluate your current soft skills and how to improve them.

Jaryd is currently a marketing student at Camosun in the Business Administration program. He runs a consulting business educating small businesses / professionals on how to effectively use social media channels to communicate their message.
“Twitter your way to work” will be an open learning walk-through session on how to use twitter to build your online/offline network and ideally find a job. It will focus on the tools, knowledge and skills required to operate the platform.

Since 2000, Paul Holmes has been President of IdeaZone.ca, a leader in website and social media marketing. He is a highly sought after international social media speaker and consultant. Paul is the social media architect for Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce.

Russel Lolacher is director and creative thinker for Communications Kitchen, a social media, content creation and branding consultation company, and serves as the communications manager for the B.C. Government Caucus. He is also a social media consultant for the Canadian Public Relations Society–Vancouver Island; writer and administrator of The Upsell blog; and co-hosts a weekly YouTube show called Getting Engaged – Online, in Life and at Work. Russel recently spoke at the 2010 Social Media Camp in Victoria and at the Technology & Politics Panel Discussion at the University of Victoria.
