Back for a third work term with the DND
Kylee Lothrop, a co-op student in the Electronics Engineering Technology program at Camosun College, is currently on her third work term with the Department of National Defence, Fleet Maintenance Facility Cape Breton.
Lothrop chose electronic engineering because of her love of math, physics and problem solving, and once in the program went on to choose co-op to gain firsthand experience and learn what it is like to work in this field. "Co-op has given me the chance to network and gain key contacts for my future," says Lothrop.
Through the tasks assigned to Lothrop on her work terms, she constantly learns things she may not have learned in the classroom. "What I learn in school is the base of the knowledge I build on during my co-op."
The Electronics Engineering Technology program provides students with the option of taking up to three work terms. Fleet Maintenance Facility spokesman Miles McKinnon says this provides a great return on investment. "Re-hiring students who have previously worked for us reduces the total time we spend in training and increases the time students spend on technical tasks." McKinnon says co-op students fulfill project needs that regular employees are unable to take on because of demanding schedules. "The model of Camosun’s technology programs works to help us accomplish our goals, because the students we hire have a solid academic foundation backed by enthusiasm to gain practical experience," says McKinnon.

The Department of National Defence provides a valuable partnership to Camosun College, and many of our co-op students, particularly in the technology engineering programs, have benefited greatly from their time spent there on work terms over the years.
As many valuable skills are learned in the work place, Lothrop advises upcoming co-op students to take advantage of every work term offered in the program. "Not only does the experience look good on the resume, but you learn quickly what jobs you like to do."
