PhD Organic Chemistry

Applied Chemistry and Biotechnology

School of Arts and Science

My interest in teaching chemistry comes from a desire to engage students, and empower them to understand how chemistry is so intertwined with the world around them. My teaching responsibilities include CHEM 110 General College Chemistry I, CHEM 120 General Chemistry I, CHEM 121 General Chemistry II, CHEM 230 Organic Chemistry 1, and CHEM 231 Organic Chemistry 2.

My path to Camosun began at the University of Alberta. As an undergraduate I had the opportunity complete an industrial internship as part of my BSc, working in process research and development. This experience solidified my interest in synthetic organic chemistry, leading me to pursue a PhD in the labs of Professor F.G. West, where I studied the synthetic methodology of pericyclic reactions.

After completing my PhD in 2014, I worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Li Ka Shing Applied Virology Institute under the supervision of Dr. Michael Houghton designing and synthesizing potential new antiviral molecules. My time at the lab bench was both challenging and rewarding, but a move to the classrooms and teaching labs of the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in 2016 was an opportunity to share some of my enthusiasm for chemistry, something I continue to share with my students since arriving at Camosun in 2018.
