Stephen Fielding

A native Ontarian from Niagara Falls, Stephen passed through Fort Erie, Sarnia, Toronto, Winnipeg, and Vancouver before landing in Victoria in 2008. He is especially interested in the less-trodden frontiers of migration and ethnicity, sport, culture, masculinity, religion, and world history. Stephen holds a BA from the University of Winnipeg, an MA from Simon Fraser University, and defended his PhD. thesis at the University of Victoria in 2018. He taught at Alexander College and the University of Victoria before joining the Humanities Department at Camosun College in 2016. His articles have been published in the Urban History Review, Oxford textbook Gender: Canadian Perspectives, International Journal of the History of Sport, Humanitas, and edited book volumes on cultural authenticity and migration, respectively.

Dr. Fielding's dissertation recently won the Canadian Historical Association's 2019 Bullen Prize, which honours the Outstanding Ph.D. Thesis on a Historical Topic in Canada. Read it here.

Studying our complex human history allows us to unearth our roots and make sense of the present. Stephen believes that teaching, like History itself, is meant to be a captivating narrative and the instructor should be the “best student,” always striving for new ways to learn and communicate knowledge of our world and its past. Outside Camosun, he can be found laughing with his spouse and two great kids, playing music, watching hockey, and drinking strong espresso.
