Basic English as a Second Language

School of Access

Amie first taught English overseas in South Korea in 2006. She had a BA and TESL certification at the time. This teaching experience sparked a desire in Amie to learn more about teaching methods and educational philosophies, so she returned to Canada a year and a half later to get her Education degree at the University of Alberta. She was teaching English as an Additional Language (EAL) to new comers in Edmonton, Alberta part time while in school for this degree and found that she had too many questions about grammar and the English language. Thus, she continued on to get her master’s degree in Education specializing in teaching English as an additional language. She was trained using the Communicative Language Teaching approach, and still uses active, engaging, meaningful and relevant teaching practices to get her language learners communicating in English while achieving the learning outcomes of the courses she teaches.  She has taught at a few different schools in Edmonton, Alberta, and in Victoria, and has been teaching the various levels offered at Camosun since 2014.

Amie is also an assessor in the English Language Department at Camosun which means she tests and places new students into the correct language level. There are various other assessment duties that Amie likes to help out with for the department too which all keep her very busy.

In her free time, Amie enjoys spending time with her family and friends, playing music, cooking, painting and doing crafty art projects. She also loves going on long road trips and camping trips with her family.

Amie is a life-long learner, a hard worker, and she believes that a positive mindset and solid determination account for the majority of any one person’s success.
