Media Release:

Thirty teams will congregate at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence (PISE) and St. Margaret’s School over the coming weekend to compete in the 2016 Camosun College Chargers Senior Girls’ High School Volleyball Tournament. The action begins at 1:00pm at both facilities on Friday, October 7.

“This tournament has become a premier event on the high school volleyball calendar and the coaches and athletes that attend truly make it special for us,” comments Chargers Women’s Volleyball Head Coach Chris Dahl. They do a tremendous job of bringing energy to the gym and in return, our program grows and carries that over into our PACWEST league play. It really is a great weekend for everyone involved.”

With strong representation from the top teams in the province, the tournament promises to showcase an impressive list of competitors, including Belmont, Mount Doug, Oak Bay, West Point Grey Academy (Vancouver), Carihi (Campbell River), Brooks (Powell River), Dover Bay (Nanaimo) and South Delta, Seaquam.

“Belmont is making a lot of noise locally and across the province,” states Coach Dahl. “They have two major tournament victories under their belt already and adding the Camosun title to their resume just might be the high school volleyball version of the Triple Crown! Mount Doug and Oak Bay are also proving to be local AAAA schools that are competing with the best in the province. West Point Grey Academy has joined the ranks of the high school elite and enter the tournament as the #2 seed in the draw.”

He adds,”There are also a lot of exciting young athletes to watch over the course of the weekend. The rosters of these teams are filled with club athletes, BC Summer Games alumni, Team BC athletes and even a few of our Team Canada Youth National team athletes from this past summer. To name a few, Savannah Purdy - Belmont, Kara Kovacs - West Point Grey Academy and Kristen McBride - Mission.“

Camosun kicks off the 2016-17 PACWEST season next Thursday, October 13 at PISE hosting the College of the Rockies Avalanche.

“I couldn’t think of a better way to kick start the season than by hosting thirty high school teams at St. Margaret’s School and at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence,” says Coach Dahl. “The College will be a truly special place for women’s volleyball this year as the season closes with the 2017 CCAA National Championships in March hosted by Camosun. This weekend’s high school athletes will help us get things started.”
