Camosun College president appointed board chair of BC Colleges

Camosun College President Sherri Bell has been appointed Board Chair of BC Colleges for a two-year term effective Nov. 21, 2019.
BC Colleges represents 10 of the province’s public post-secondary colleges. Presidents from each institution meet monthly during the post-secondary year, September through June, to discuss common issues and shared priorities.
Bell takes over the position from North Island College’s President John Bowman.
“Colleges in B.C. are committed to a province where everyone has the opportunity to succeed through accessible, affordable and applied education and skills training,” says Bell. “Thank you to John Bowman for his leadership. I’m excited at the opportunities that lie ahead to create life-changing learning opportunities that support families, employers and our provincial economy.”
“The role of BC Colleges is to work closely with major employers, stakeholders and government regarding partnerships, investments and public policy, and to facilitate collaboration between the colleges so they can deliver education and skills training to learners across B.C., making them exceptionally prepared for the emerging economy,” says BC Colleges President Colin Ewart.
The board chair is expected to work with all the B.C. college presidents, The Research Universities’ Council of BC, and the BC Association of Institutes and Universities on enhancing the work of the colleges with employers and key stakeholders to educate and prepare learners for the emerging economy.
BC Colleges’ priorities are outlined in their 2019/2020 strategic report Transforming for Tomorrow – BC Colleges Creating Opportunities for All. Key initiatives include a focus on: innovation; dual credit opportunities for high school students; Indigenous education; and, financial flexibility and sustainability.
