Public Service Annoucement
June 13, 2019

Fifteen students from Camosun College’s Fine Furniture program used the fundamentals learned in the first eight months of the program to design and build their signature chairs. The finished chairs are part of Willing and Maple: Seating in Western Maple at the Arts Centre at Cedar Hill Recreation Centre.

Each student was challenged to design and manufacture seating using maple purchased with funds donated by the Vancouver Island Woodworkers' Guild.

The chairs will be judged by an industry panel and with the opportunity for visitors to vote for their favourite. Other student projects completed during the year will also be on display.

Special Events

Meet the Makers

Thursday, June 20 • noon-2pm

Students will talk about the design and build process of their work. They will bring into the gallery some of the tools, jigs, and design paraphernalia that went into the creation of their pieces. The format will be an informal interview by the instructor, Sandra Carr, with time for participant questions and comments. Each student will invite a guest to ‘test sit’ their chair!

The first 25 attendees for the event will receive a hand-crafted wooden spatula made by student Francois Paquette.

Steam Bending Demonstration

Thursday, June 27 • noon-2pm

Watch and learn as students of the program use a traditional bending technique to fashion curved components for a small decorative item. Learn about the science of wood that allows it to be bent and manipulated into curved shapes, then hold its form as it cools. Our small but effective set-up of kitchen kettles, plumbing pipe and oven mitts will amaze you!

The first 25 attendees for the event will receive a hand-crafted wooden spatula made by student Francois Paquette.

Camosun's Fine Furniture students spend an intensive ten month period in the program, graduating with a Certificate in Fine Furniture and Joinery Foundation. This year marks the 32nd year of the program and showcase of student work.
