October 3, 2018, from 2:30-6pm, at Lansdowne Campus
Release Date: September 17, 2018
Hosted on the traditional territories of the Lekwungen and W̱SÁNEĆ people, the Camosun Farmers' Market will inspire and engage people by increasing access to local food, enhancing the student experience, and inviting the community to take part in a fun and engaging event. Local farmers and producers will have the opportunity to sell their goods as well as highlight how they are contributing to a more sustainable future.
Driven by a team of passionate faculty, staff and students, the Farmers' Market began as an event that contributes to hands-on learning and the student experience. The Camosun Farmers' market is a shared project between students, faculty and staff in various departments and areas at the college with the goal of exploring and developing new relationships with the community.
"We're very excited to provide this opportunity for students, faculty, staff and the broader community to meet local growers, and to learn about sustainable food and practices," says Maria Bremner, Camosun's Sustainability manager. "Our students frequently identify food as an important sustainability topic. Food is a great conversation starter to get people thinking about the connections between the health of themselves as individuals, the land, and the broader community. It's also just a great opportunity to bring people together and enjoy some tasty, healthy food."
Featuring some new urban farmers as well as some of Camosun's own alumni, the market will also feature some of the work that Camosun's own departments are doing relating to food. Some of the local growers and producers include:
- Top Soil
- Healing Farm
- Silver Rill Corn
- Sun Lotus
- Babes Honey
- Ravensong Seeds
- Shelbourne Community Kitchen
- Mix't Greens Farm Stand, Camosun's E.A.R.T.H. Gardening program
Camosun's new Culinary Arts Food Truck and the Songhees Food Truck will also be on hand to supply some great food.
