Panel will discuss how compassion influences work in the criminal justice system
October 4, 2018 at 6pm in the Gibson Auditorium, Lansdowne campus

Camosun’s Criminal Justice department is hosting the Compassion in The Criminal Justice System panel on October 4 in the Gibson Auditorium on Lansdowne campus. The panel will discuss how the concept of compassion influences the work of professionals and academics in the criminal justice system and, more importantly, how a compassion-centered approach to addressing criminal behaviors can support the reduction of trauma responses and re-traumatization in Community members and criminal justice professionals, alike.

“A compassion forward approach to addressing criminal behaviors may be the piece that is missing from the current model,” says Blair Fisher, Chair of Camosun’s Criminal Justice department. “The intent behind this panel is to examine the degree to which professionals and academics working in the criminal justice system are currently infusing their work with a compassionate perspective and to understand where a more compassion forward approach might offer the most benefit.”

The panel of criminal justice system experts are from various backgrounds and include:

  • Gillian Lindquist, Restorative Justice Victoria
  • Judge Christine Lowe, Provincial Court of BC
  • Dr. David Milward, Faculty of Law, University of Victoria
  • Melissa Murray, Crown Counsel

The Compassion in the Criminal Justice System panel is free to attend and open to anyone interested in the criminal justice system.
