Camosun College Alumni Association and Josai International University (JIU) co-hosted an alumni event at the Embassy of Canada in Tokyo on October 25.

More than 30 graduates met up with university and college representatives and international dignitaries for a formal and private reception to celebrate the longest international partnership between the two institutions formalized in 1992.

H.I.H. Princess Takamado attended the event on behalf of the Japanese Imperial Family. Princess Takamado’s daughter, H.I. H. Princess Ayako of Takamado, who is soon to be married, is a distinguished international alumnus of Camosun College and JIU. Geoff Wilmshurst, Vice President, Partnerships, represented Camosun and Vice-President Kurabayashi represented Josai International University

“Camosun has a long-standing partnership with Josai International University and a close relationship to the Princess Ayako and her family,” said Wilmshurst. “This event was an opportunity to reconnect with our Japanese alumni network and to celebrate this next step in Princess Ayako’s life. We were honoured to have Princess Takamado in attendance at our first international alumni event.”

JIU is Camosun’s oldest exchange partner. Camosun students attend JIU for Japanese language and international relations course. Camosun has welcomed over 200 JIU students for academic and English language programs and short-term exchanges each year.

Princess Ayako received the inaugural Camosun President’s Award for International Partnership in 2017 and currently works as a researcher at JIU. She attended Camosun between 2013 and 2015 and maintains a close connection to the college.

This was the first international networking event for the Camosun College Alumni Association. The association fosters meaningful, mutually beneficial, life-long relationships between the college, its graduates, students and the community.
