Camosun College’s new sexual violence and misconduct policy approved by board
Release Date: May 18, 2017
Camosun College’s new Sexual Violence and Misconduct Policy has received unanimous approval by the college’s Board of Governors.
The new policy is now in effect with information on support services and resources for students available online: camosun.ca/sexual-violence. The dedicated website provides resources to assist those who need support and those who may give support to anyone who may disclose a sexual violence or misconduct incident.
The college’s Sexual Violence and Misconduct Policy and supporting resources is the result of a year-long, robust consultation and engagement process with the entire college community, involving current students, student advisory committee, faculty, staff, counsellors and external experts in the field, including the Victoria Sexual Assault Centre, Island Sexual Health Society and the Ending Violence Association of BC. To develop the policy, the college community was invited to participate in a series of online surveys, in-person consent education workshops, focus groups and college-wide feedback sessions.
“This is the result of a tremendous effort to have the policy reflect the voices of the people who learn, teach and work here on campus,” says Vice President of Student Experience Joan Yates.
Provincial law required that all universities and colleges in BC have sexual violence and misconduct policies and procedures in place by May 19, 2017.
Camosun has also hired Lori Horne in a new Student Support Manager position, under the division of Student Experience. Along with her work with at-risk students, her role is to provide information and support for any students who have experienced sexual violence or misconduct. The Student Support Office will ensure students receive the resources they need, and guide them in understanding college processes related to sexual violence and misconduct. Students’ concerns will be treated sensitively and with respect, and the college will honour their situation and choices they wish to make.
Camosun College aims to foster a safe and respectful campus environment for all and a supportive environment on campus for survivors.
