Camosun grad Alexander Relf has been recognized as one of the province’s top 30 business people under the age of 30 by BCBusiness. Relf graduated from Camosun’s Hospitality Management program in 2009 and co-founded an Australian-style meat pie business, Peaked Pies, in Whistler.

Relf and his life and business partner, Kerri Jones, opened Peaked Pies in 2013 to great reception by the local community. They’ve recently opened a second shop in downtown Vancouver and employ 40 people between the two locations.

“Camosun played a huge role in turning my business dream into a reality,” said 29-year-old Relf. “The Hospitality program introduced the many pieces that go into running a business, from accounting to managing staff. It also gave me the courage to dive into my own venture.”

Originally from Victoria, Relf relocated to Whistler after graduation and worked at the Four Seasons Resort. He also met Jones, who is from Australia. The two budding entrepreneurs identified an opportunity to introduce savoury pies to the Canadian market while also providing a taste of home for visiting Aussies and Brits.

The couple continued working at their day jobs while they developed the business plan and foundation for Peaked Pies. When the time was right, they quit their jobs and focused on the business full time.

Relf continues to stay connected to Camosun by sitting on the Hospitality Management program’s advisory committee and mentoring current students.

BCBusiness’ 30 Under 30 finalists were honoured at a celebration event in Vancouver on April 13, 2017. The annual event celebrates young entrepreneurs who excel in their respective industries, give back to their community, and are expected to lead business in the province for years to come. The 30 Under 30 winners are featured in the April issue of BCBusiness magazine.
