Camosun College’s Visual Art Department with the English Department and Library have teamed up to bring a night of poetry and art on Thursday, March 31 in the Alan Batey Library on Lansdowne campus.

Beginning in January, the Visual Art Department invited poets to create original pieces inspired by art based on a visual art piece from Camosun’s art collection. They were given three weeks to write their poem which could be about the scene being depicted in the artwork, write in the voice of the person depicted in the artwork, speak to the artist or subject of the painting, or it could be a poetic investigation into colour. The poems were then used as inspiration for new works of art. Artists were invited to choose a poem written by one of the participants, and create a visual artwork based on that poem. The artists were also given three weeks to create a piece that engaged with the entire feeling/meaning of the poem, a line, or even a moment in the poem.

The Gala celebrates the contemporary visual art and poetry that is the result of this “evolution of inspiration”.

Starts: 6:30pm

  • 6:30-7pm – Art viewing and welcome
  • 7-8pm – Poetry reading
  • 8-9pm – Reception

More information is available at the Art-Poem-Art Experiment website.
