Camosun achieves STARS silver sustainability rating
Release Date: January 7, 2016
Camosun College has earned a STARS Silver Rating in recognition of its sustainability achievements from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE).
STARS, the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System measures and encourages sustainability in all aspects of higher education. With more than 650 participants worldwide, AASHE’s STARS program is the most widely recognized framework for publicly reporting information an institute’s sustainability performance in the areas of operations, academics, engagement and planning and administration.
This is the first time Camosun has completed a full STARS evaluation process, which included nine months of data collection, analysis and assessment from all areas of the college. “The inaugural silver rating is a respectable benchmark, and it reflects the hard work our students, staff and faculty have put forward to make sustainability a priority at Camosun,” says Shannon Craig, Interim Manager of Environmental Sustainability. “The great thing about STARS is that it’s an objective and comprehensive evaluation system that demonstrates our commitment to sustainability and it is also a tool to help manage our overall footprint moving forward.”
Sustainability is not a new concept at Camosun. It has been championed by various individuals, departments and schools for a number of years in almost every facet of the college and more formally with the development of the Office of Environmental Sustainability. The STARS report highlights these achievements and identifies areas in which Camosun can improve upon in the future.
The post-secondary sector has a critical role to play to realize a sustainable world for future generations and the well-being of the Earth. Sustainability at Camosun is the right thing to do, both in how we operate as an institution, and in how we prepare students for roles in their communities and workplaces. Participating in the STARS program helps the college realize this vision while supporting the Camosun College Sustainability Plan in advancing its key initiatives and goals.
“STARS is open to all higher education institutes,” says Craig. “The rating criteria are transparent and accessible to anyone and, because STARS is a program based on credits earned, it allows for both internal comparisons as well as comparisons with similar institutions.”
