Release Date: September 15, 2015
Camosun College Board of Governors is pleased to announce the election of a new Board Chair, Mr. Russ Lazaruk.
Russ Lazaruk, a member of the college’s board since 2011, was elected Chair at the inaugural meeting, September 14, 2015. He succeeds Dr. Marilyn Pattison, who served as Chair since fall 2013. A dedicated member, Russ has served as Vice Chair of the Board of Governors since 2014, and is a member of the Audit, Finance, External Relations and Executive Committees. “Camosun has a bright future ahead of it. The new Trades facility and the potential for a new Health and Human Services building are just two examples of the growth we see ahead. At its core though, Camosun is a teaching and learning institution and I am looking forward to working with the entire college community to ensure we continue to provide outstanding educational opportunities for our students,” says Lazaruk.
Russ is a Chartered Investment Manager and Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute. He is a Portfolio Manager with Dundee Goodman Private Wealth in Victoria. Previously, he was the Branch Manager and an Associate Director at Macquarie Private Wealth, Victoria. He also worked as an Investment Executive for ScotiaMcLeod (Victoria) and Branch Manager/Investment Executive at ScotiaMcLeod (Courtenay). Russ has worked in BC’s forest industry and operated a family farm on Salt Spring Island. He also served in the British Army (1973-1978).
While living on Salt Spring, Russ was Director (1980-1987) and Chair (1988) of the Island Farmers Institute. From 1981-1987, he sat on the Salt Spring Island Advisory Planning Commission and also held the position of Chair (1985-1987). Other non-profit organizations that have benefited from his expertise include the Greater Victoria Public Library (Trustee), Pacific Tattoo 2012, and the Greater Victoria Art Gallery. Russ is currently a Director of the Garth Homer Society (Victoria), Treasurer of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards (BC & Yukon) and former president of the Colwood Rotary. He is a keen sailor, rugby player and bike rider, however spending time with family and friends are still his main priority.
"Camosun is very fortunate to retain the leadership of Mr. Lazaruk,” says past Chair Pattison. “He has a long association with Camosun both as a member and Vice Chair of the Board. His guidance as Chair of the President Search Committee in 2014/2015 was instrumental in the selection of the President of Camosun College. That, along with his personal dedication and strong leadership skills will make him an invaluable asset to the Board”.
