Students looking to upgrade their basic academic and English as a Second Language (ESL) skills can still do so through Camosun College.

"Camosun is always committed to ensuring access to education; it's one of our fundamental values," says Camosun Vice President of Education John Boraas. "We want to emphasize that students who wish to take academic upgrading and English as a Second Language courses can do so anytime throughout the year at Camosun. We have the programs and we have the learning supports to help individuals succeed, whatever their educational journey."

Those looking to upgrade their basic English and math skills right away can still take advantage of tuition-free academic upgrading and ESL courses this spring and summer. Spring semester has started, but seats may be available, and the Summer semester starts July 6.  To register, interested students should contact Camosun's Admissions Office at: 250-370-3550 or visit: camosun.ca.

"Starting this September, however, the college will be charging tuition fees for academic upgrading, English language development (ESL) and employment preparation (BEST) programs," says Boraas.

The Ministry of Advanced Education is allowing post-secondary institutions in BC to charge tuition for Adult Basic Education (ABE) and domestic ESL programming to offset the reduction of funding formerly provided to post-secondary institutions to support these areas of programming.

"As a result, Camosun has built a new sustainable operating model that incorporates a substantial financial assistance program to give these students options and opportunities," adds Boraas.

"There is a lot of financial assistance available for the majority of these students, and we expect most of them will qualify for non-repayable grants or bursaries that will fully cover their tuition," he explains.

One of the grants available to eligible low income students, who need math and English upgrading, is the Adult Upgrading Grant (AUG) offered by the Ministry of Advanced Education. These grants are based on financial need to help students in Camosun's Academic Upgrading, ESL, Employment Training and Preparation (ETP) and Building Employment Success for Tomorrow (BEST) programs. The AUG grant assists with costs like tuition, fees and books. These grants do not need to be repaid.

Students who are not eligible for AUG assistance may be eligible for alternative funding through a special non-repayable transition bursary offered by the college which covers tuition only.
