Studies in Seating: The Camosun College 2015 Fine Furniture Year End Exhibition
Release Date: June 17, 2015
June 18-July 2, 2015 at The Arts Centre at Cedar Hill
Cedar Hill Recreation Centre, 3220 Cedar Hill Rd, Victoria
After ten intense and creative months, 15 students are about to graduate from Camosun College with a certificate in Fine Furniture and Joinery. To celebrate, they are showcasing their final projects in a public exhibit called "Studies in Seating" at the Arts Centre at Cedar Hill Recreation Centre.
The title and designs for the exhibition came from the "study" of many different types of seating with each student's design coming from the process of studying many different chairs. Studies included how various styles of chairs are constructed and how well they function ergonomically.
"The project allowed the students to push their skills in the areas of furniture design, construction, and finishing," says Ken Guenter, Fine Furniture Program Instructor. "The exhibition helps promote the fact that high quality well designed furniture is being made here in Victoria out of our local wood resources."
The wood used was donated by the Vancouver Island Woodworker's Guild by way of an annual $800 donation. The Guild will be presenting the student who is judged to have the best piece with a $500 award. Judging will take place at the exhibition venue and be completed by a panel of experienced furniture industry designers, builders and retailers.
The public is welcome to view the exhibit from June 18 to July 2, Monday to Friday from 6:30am to 10pm; Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 9pm.
