Camosun instructor delivers wind energy lecture to Brazilian engineering students
Release Date: June 10, 2014
A class of nearly 70 first-year engineering students in south Brazil linked to Camosun's Library technology centre for a video conference and lecture on wind energy. The Brazilian students attend IFSul, the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology in Pelotas, Brazil, and the guest lecture was delivered as part of their Introduction to Engineering course.
Camosun instructor Joyce van de Vegte of Electronics & Computer Engineering Technology presented the lecture in English, while a faculty team from Pelotas facilitated and translated the presentation into Portuguese. A small audience of Camosun Renewable Energy Systems students who participated in the forum were very fortunate to have Professor Mauro André B. Cunha, an administrator and electrical engineer from IFSul, in attendance, not only to help with translation but also to share his knowledge of renewable energy initiatives in Brazil. Professor Cunha spent the past three months at Camosun College studying partnerships and applied research. "We hope this video conferencing experiment will lead to other online exchanges between IFSul and Camosun," says van de Vegte. "Connecting with other parts of the world helps to develop our students' global perspective."
Many thanks to the Pelotas team that facilitated the simulcast lecture in Brazil: Prof. Eng. Júlio César M. Ruzicki, chair of Electrical Engineering; Prof. Eduardo Costa da Motta, electrical engineering faculty; and Prof. Ana Maria Martins Roeber, English faculty.
